Continuous Deployment: Vanity or Real Capability?
Continuous deployment is often chased as a vanity metric rather than a flow enabler. When it genuinely changes delivery, and when it creates false confidence.
Continuous deployment matters because it shortens feedback loops
Continuous Deployment often becomes a bragging right for a technology organization. “We can deploy 13,593 times a day.” “A developer can deploy the product on their first day.” “Our pets can deploy to production.” Fine. But that misses the point.
Few organizations need continuous deployment purely for time-to-market. The deeper reason it matters is that integrating and deploying every small change dramatically reduces the length of the feedback loop.
We talk about empowered product teams: empowered to deliver outcomes. But under uncertainty, we do not know whether a given product change will deliver the expected outcome. We need to try, inspect, and adapt. Without fast deployment, it can take weeks to inspect and adapt, which pushes us back toward assumptions, large plans, and over-specification.
Product operating models are cool, but without the ability to close feedback loops, make a decision, and gauge whether it creates the experience and behavior we hypothesized, it is product theater. On the other hand, if you can continuously deploy but are not using it to close feedback loops, that is also theater.
And what if you are designing razors, molecules, laundry care formulas, or craft beer? The intent is still the same: close fast feedback loops. You might 3D print the latest increment of a razor benefit bar, formulate a trial run of beer or laundry care, and get it in front of customers, not to make money immediately, but to learn and adapt.
Like any other practice, it is about intent. Understanding the intent helps us adjust the practice to the context, especially when using continuous deployment outside its usual software context.
