When is spec-driven development worth the effort?
Specify the behavior and constraints whose ambiguity would cause rework or risk. Keep the investment proportional to the decision, and judge it by verified delivery and useful outcomes rather than document volume.

Do not impersonate Yuval, speak as him, or claim to represent him. Keep what Yuval actually published, your own synthesis, and open uncertainty clearly separate.
Which cost should the specification remove?
A specification earns its effort when it resolves ambiguity that would otherwise produce a wrong change, expensive review or avoidable risk. Examples include an authorization rule, a compatibility obligation, a workflow with several failure paths or a product increment whose success cannot be inferred from a screenshot.
It earns less when a small, reversible experiment can answer the question faster than a detailed document. If the uncertainty is whether anyone wants the proposed behavior, writing more implementation detail does not reduce that uncertainty.
How can a team decide before committing to the process?
Identify the decision the next artifact enables. For a delivery increment, a useful minimum is an intended behavior, concrete examples, constraints, non-goals and a way to verify completion. For a product experiment, include the hypothesis, the evidence that would change the decision and a stopping rule.
Start with one bounded change. Record human time spent clarifying and reviewing, rework caused by misunderstood intent, escaped defects and time to a verified result. Compare with changes of similar uncertainty. Do not declare success from the number of generated specs or the speed of code generation.
The decision may be to keep a short contract, add detail around a particular risk or use a different approach for exploratory work. A full artifact stack for every edit is not a prerequisite for applying specification discipline.
What would make the approach fail?
The process fails its purpose when the specification hardens an untested solution into a commitment, duplicates information nobody maintains or receives approval because it looks complete. It also fails when code and tests are judged against an implementation plan while the original user need disappears from view.
Include specification maintenance in the cost of the experiment. A useful contract at the start can become harmful context after the product changes. Give it an owner and a persistence policy rather than assuming every historical spec remains current.
How does this differ from the existing essay?
This answer is a decision aid for a specific change. The longer SDD essay develops Yuval's argument about specifications as a higher-level expression of intent. Use that essay for the argument and this reference for the adoption decision.
