Sense & Respond Learning · Outcomes Over Output

Lots of AI activity. What actually changed?

You can count pilots, bots, licenses, and tokens. You can point to what teams produced. The harder question is whether anyone works differently because of it, and whether that change matters.

I facilitate Sense & Respond Learning’s Outcomes Over Output workshop as a Certified Training Partner. For AI transformation teams, it gives people a practical way to define the outcomes behind the work they’re already doing.

The problem

Tokenmaxxing and bots nobody uses can both look like progress.

I’ve seen organizations start with access to tools, AI literacy sessions, hackathons, and experiments. There’s a lot of motion. Those are useful starts. But activity can become a comfortable measure of progress while the work itself barely changes.

Output can get stuck too. Teams build more, while what they built waits for someone to deploy it, trust it, or use it. Before another use case goes on the dashboard, name the change it is supposed to create.

Activity

People use more AI tokens.

Output

A team ships another bot.

Outcome question

Who uses it in real work, and what changes?

Sense & Respond Learning’s Outcomes Over Output

This is the Sense & Respond Learning course, created by Jeff Gothelf and Josh Seiden and delivered by their Certified Training Partners. I use its materials as they are. In the setup and examples, we orient the impact and outcome questions around your AI transformation work.

The workshop teaches teams to measure what changes because of what they build. For an AI initiative, that means getting beyond “we deployed it” and defining the change you would need to see to call the effort worthwhile.

What the course helps your team learn

  • Tell the difference between an output and an outcome in plain language.
  • Define meaningful outcomes for the work your team is doing.
  • Connect those outcomes to the business goals they support.
  • Use outcomes to make better decisions about what to build.
  • Build support for outcome-based work across the team or organization.

Who it is for

For AI transformation leaders and the L&D teams helping them.

AI transformation leaders can use the workshop when teams have plenty of initiatives but no shared answer to “what should change?” L&D leaders can bring an established SRL course to the people responsible for those initiatives, rather than another session about tool use.

The outcome questions work beyond product and engineering. Your AI work might sit in operations, service, marketing, HR, or another function. The setup draws on the initiatives and impact questions your team brings; the SRL materials stay intact.

Bring it to your team

Bring an AI initiative. Get clearer about the change you need to look for.

The workshop helps your team make its outcome hypothesis clearer. Whether the initiative produces that outcome is something you still have to test in the work.
